» Introduction:
For the past two decades, Terry Winters has created a complex and compelling body of work, delving deeply into the relationships between science and art, and probing the meaning and relevancy of abstraction in our time. Born in New York City in 1949, the paintings of Terry Winters are rooted in the urban space of Abstract Expressionism. Later the artist was greatly affected by the conceptually-driven works of Jasper Johns and Cy Twombly. Winters has investigated the intersections of natural history, ecology, and new technologies with aesthetics, while remaining committed to the traditional disciplines of drawing, printmaking and painting. The artist has described his work as a place "where the boundaries between the natural and the artificial aren't so distinct, where the artificial and the technological are just seen as newer orders of nature."
» Concept:
The exhibition will include four large-scale paintings, a suite of ten graphite drawings all produced in the last year, and the print portfolio "Tokyo Notes," produced and published in Tokyo with Kido Press in 2005.
These new works reflect Winters's continuing interest in exploring and mapping bodies of order, chaos, gravity and speed through the abstract use of color, line and volume. In both the paintings and drawings, the spaces of the information age are mediated by human gesture, creating images that are at once contemporary and archaic. The artist has introduced a formal theme to these new works, coiled knot-like forms that, particularly when layered, take on a figural, sculptural resonance, much like architectural bas-relief. The palette Winters has chosen for these new works bridges two decades of his oeuvre, drawing on the rich, primordial earth tones of his work from the 1980s and the vibrant, saturated reds and blues of his work from the 1990s. These colors are injected with a sharpness and precision uniquely characteristic of this new body of work.
