- Tomio Koyama Gallery 7th floor
- opening reception 3.8. sat. 6:00 - 8:00pm
» Introduction:
The toy car collection Jeremy Dickinson has amassed since childhood is the primary motif in his paintings. The many vehicles - from buses, classic cars, and roadsters, to trains, caravan, and fire trucks - are all minutely rendered.
Each of these quintessential miniatures is a repository of memory for the artist, and he arranges them, as a child might, in a host of situations that never fail to summon recollections from our own childhoods.
At times, in an evolving series of compositions, he coolly groups the cars in teams based on shape or color. The vehicles, with every scratch intact, always appear the same size regardless of how big the canvas is, and this gives viewers various sensations of scale. Contrary to the cars' precise detailing, the backgrounds are uniformly plain and evoke infinitely unfolding space. These simple backgrounds not only serve to illuminate the colors of the cars but also to trigger viewers' imaginations.
» Concept:
This exhibition will present roughly ten large and ten small paintings made during 2007 and 2008. In addition to his well-known stacked-car series, Dickinson will show a variety of new works including International Bus Park, featuring an earthwork-like deployment of vehicles, and colorful building-block & car “maps” such as Football League Map of England and Wales. We urge you to take this opportunity to see Dickinson's lively imagery.
