» Introduction:

Fukui's painting is includes ordinary shapes and as dull aspects from indoor life at various angles mirroring the emotional pattern of a human mind. It is possible to see over a window, but impossible to see beyond the out side of a window. Fukui sets up situations where the audience is involved in the vision that Fukui created. Fukui said that real world and fantasy is overlap in a screen, he presents the gap between them. For the artist, "it is the world that he is seeing but doesn't comprehend".

» Concept:

This will be Fukui's solo exhibition with Tomio Koyama Gallery, Fukui will show six middle size of paintings and two large size paintings. The new paintings have forest image with a girl which he depicted using high skill and a realistic way, also there is the usual Fukui paintings aspect of soft pale touch and sharpened style. They look dreamy and poetic scene. There is a Fukui's special trick and scale. The night scene that Fukui lately has painted is changing to the morning which has bright sunshine. All the paintings are lightly coated with eye floater like a cloud which is a substance appearing in the eyes. What this means is a audience is actually looking at the world through the crevice between reality and non-reality.

» Artist Biography:

Atsushi Fukui was born in 1966 in Aichi Prefecture. He graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, faculty of oil painting. The artist lives and works in Tokyo.

After his graduation from university, he abandoned the creation of art works for ten years for music activities such as playing in a band and composing music. Since 1988 he returned the art world and started to create art works. Recently he started to participate in group exhibitions, such as "morning glory" in 2001 which was curated by artist Yoshitomo Nara. Fukui's works has been featured in several group exhibitions inside of Japan, these include "New Generations Japanese Painter" at Hiroshima City Museum of Art (2003), "Roppongi Crossing" at the Mori Art Museum (2004) where he composed his installation with drawings, paintings and sculpture. Recently Fukui is for providing works for David Sylvian's CD sleeve and tour catalogue.
