» 作品紹介

桑久保徹は自分の中に架空の画家を見いだすという演劇的なアプローチで制作活動をスタートしました。印象派の画家たちが行ったように海辺にイーゼルを立てて絵を描いたり、描いた絵を背中にくくりつけて「絵を売り歩く放浪画家」としてパフォーマンスしたりと、彼がイメージするいわゆる職業画家をいわば演じてみることが、最初の制作のきっかけになりました。
画家に扮した彼が好んで描くようになったのは、多くが海のモチーフです。オイルを混ぜず、油絵の具だけを分厚く盛り上げて描いていくタッチは、現代美術というよりも明らかにゴッホの作品を想起させます。現代においてはもはや古典になりつつある印象派の技法と、桑久保自身の中にある現在の心象風景が重なり合って作品を作り上げています。海辺に穴を掘る人々など、架空の物語を背負った初期の作品から、海面を漂う花が浪漫的に描かれた作品、更に近年では、作家自身の頭の中にあるものが海岸いっぱいに並んでいるかのような、モチーフそのもののフォルムや色彩により焦点の当てられたシリーズが登場しています。

» 展覧会について

「最近、何を見ても絵の中のモチーフのように見える」という作家の、大きな海岸のペインティングと小さな風景画や静物画を展示いたします。
展覧会タイトル「World Citizens with the White Boxes」は、彼がヨーロッパに滞在中、エスカレーターを上ってくる女性がまるで彫像のように見えたことから、全ての人が白い箱の台座を持った彫刻だとしたら、という小さな幻想から来ています。20世紀の日本人洋画家のように渡欧を経た作家の、今の視点をどうぞご高覧ください。

» 作家プロフィール

桑久保徹は1978年、神奈川県座間市生まれ。2002年多摩美術大学絵画科油画専攻卒業。現在も神奈川県を拠点に活動を行っています。2002 年、東京都現代美術館主催のトーキョーワンダーウォール公募2002で「トーキョーワンダーウォール賞」を受賞。2004年のGEISAI-5にて、小山登美夫がスカウトしました。
主な個展に、「The Woman Living on the Beach｣(do ART Gallery、ソウル、07年）「SCENERY OF TOMORROW｣(bendixen contemporary art、コペンハーゲン、デンマーク、07年）「Illusion of the Sea Ebbing Away｣(Galerie Davide Gallo、ベルリン、06年）、「From Scratch: BLOOMFIELD｣(牡丹靖佳と二人展、トーキョーワンダーサイト渋谷、東京、06年）、主なグループ展に「ポートレート・セッション｣(広島市現代美術館、広島、ナディフ、東京、07年）があります。
小山登美夫ギャラリーでは、05年の個展以来3年ぶり、2度目の展覧会です。
