| Mamoru TSUKADA was Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1962. Tsukada studied photography at Marymount College in Los Angeles and at the International Center of Photography in New York. Currently, he works in Tokyo. He has been taking pictures of blind people. A documentary video team became interested in his work and has been filming him while he takes pictures of blind people. He started shooting the crew, too, and directed situations to include them, documenting what happened to them during that time. With this series, he has now published his first book and used a quote from Immanuel Kant for the title: "THE FACT THAT WE ARE COMPELLED TO LOOK OUTBEYOND OUR SENSIBLE REPRESENTATIONS". This series is a contemplation on visual capacity, on people with and without sight, on night and day, inside and outside, reality and fiction. TSUKADA says: "Blind people create connections and distance between the objects in their surroundings by moving their two hands. That makes an imaginary dimension. This method may be similar to what I did with my photography." This is Mamoru TSUKADA's first solo exhibition in Tomio Koyama Gallery. We will show the series of photographs from the book "THE FACT THAT WE ARE COMPELLED TO LOOK OUT BEYOND OUR SENSIBLE REPRESENTATIONS". |
