Yuka Kashihara was born in the prefecture of Hiroshima, Japan in 1980. She
graduated from Musashino Art University in 2006, majoring in Japanese
Painting. In 2006, she moved to Germany and enrolled in the Academy of
Visual Arts (HGB) Leipzig in 2007. Kashihara held a solo exhibition
"Shakkei" at Bauhaus Dessau (curated by Torsten Blume) in 2008, and
her first solo exhibition at Tomio Koyama Gallery in 2011.
Kashihara creates rich and deep colors by laying thin layers of oil
paint in the technique of Japanese painting, which she learned during her studies in Japan. In the world of her work, existing sceneries and imaginary inner spaces are woven
together. Kashihara developed such practices after leaving Japan and working in Germany. Another area of interest is focused on the subject of “distances”; physical distance
between Germany and Japan, emotional distance with people and both
cultures, and the distance inside of herself as Japanese and her living
in Germany. Experiencing these “distances” has turned her motif
such as the cave, the mountain, and the lake into the expressions that convey her
 deep reflexivity.
